He is elected deputy of Neuilly, and then he is appointed Minister of the Budget in Edouard Balladur's government. During the capture of hostages from the nursery school at Neuilly, he negotiates directly with the madman and succeeds in getting out of the school, with a child in his arms.
Sarkozy is appointed Minister of Economics, Finance and Industry in Raffarin's third Government. He leaves this post due to the wishes of the Head of State, after having been elected President of the UMP with 85.1% of the votes. He is also elected County Councillor of the Neuilly-sur-Seine Nord canton and President of the Hauts-de-Seine County Council.
